«United we are strong!» poem.
A boy and a girl,
standing together in the middle
of a once beautiful place,
which now looks as
a result of all made mistakes.
“What happened, sister?
What is the matter with our lake?”
‘I am so sorry, dear brother,
now its existence is at stake.’
“No! Why?
What are we going to do?”
‘It is a climate change.
We can’t even imagine
what the Earth is going through.’
“Explain it, please. I do not
understand.”
‘Gas emissions, global warming,
Terms for you might be disturbing.
Breathe in, brother, do you feel it?
Air smells filthy and polluted.
Stale, dry, dusty.
So many adjectives used to explain
that thermal power stations are
a losing game.
As well as cars:
hybrid, gasoline or diesel.
Amount of emissions they
produce is a pure evil.
It is hard to switch all cars
to electric ones,
But we ought to start now, it should
not be expected to happen so fast.
We’ll begin brightening our future,
less worrying about our past.
So hard to talk about your beloved
animals, who live on glaciers,
which are melting steadily.
Penguins, seals, so many more, are
losing their homes inevitably.
Now for people it’s not surprising.
So isn’t coral bleaching, sea level rising.
The food, that whales and dolphins
Depend on, is moving away,
where the water is cooler,
because there’s no other way.
Thousands of marine animals suffering,
Looking for food everywhere.
It’s going to be more year after year,
Ocean feels the slightest change, even
though for us there’s nothing strange.
We throw trash, poisoning the soil,
Demanding for a good harvest after all.
It is very hard to hear all of these,
But there are millions of caring people
on Earth. Thus, we can’t stand still
and lose our nature, our ocean, our home.
We can’t drown in a thought gloam,
idling and guessing’.
“Is everything going to change now?”
‘It is going to be hotter in Astana,
brother,
I know, you always loved our cool
summer,
but changes are coming, world will
never be the same.’
“But, sister, we have to do something,
It’s a shame!”.
‘That’s true! We need to tell
Everyone, our relatives and friends.
They’ll tell the others and others,
So everyone on this planet will know,
Jointly, we’re going to save the world’s glow.’
I have been writing this poem for an Ocean Awareness Contest 2024, winners of which were announced recently.
Although I did not win, I am proud of the work I have been writing for 1.5 month. It means a world to me that my debut poem was sent to a contest with 5500 participants.
Additionally, I have joined a big community which consists of 38000 environmental activists and I have zero regrets about spending my time on this meaningful poem.
